Vantage Auto Technology Student Makes Program History with State Championship Win and National Berth

The Vantage Career Center Auto Technology program has reached a historic milestone as senior Isaac Heitman (Jennings) earned 1st place at the State of Ohio SkillsUSA Automotive Service Technician competition—a first-ever achievement for the program. With this victory, Isaac has secured a berth at the national SkillsUSA competition, marking another first for both himself and the Vantage Auto Technology program.
Isaac’s success is the result of years of dedication, hands-on experience, and a passion for the automotive industry. His journey began at the age of 12 when he first started working on vehicles alongside his father. His first major project—replacing a heater core—earned him $500.00 and sparked his interest in automotive work. Over the years, he and his father spent countless hours maintaining and repairing vehicles together, solidifying his passion for the field and motivating him to pursue the Vantage Auto Technology program. For the past few years, he has been honing his skills while working at Greve Chrysler and Dodge in Van Wert. His work-based learning, combined with the in-depth training provided by the Vantage Auto Technology program, has propelled him to the top of the competition, showcasing his industry knowledge, technical expertise, and problem-solving abilities.
Beyond earning state champion status, Isaac's champion status has also earned him three scholarships totaling $27,500.00, high-quality tools, including Icon and Snap-on tools worth approximately $1,200.00, and apparel to help further his career in the automotive industry. These rewards not only recognize his exceptional performance but also serve as a stepping stone toward a bright future in the field.
“Isaac entered Vantage with valuable experience, having worked at a dealership prior to his junior year,” says Auto Technology Instructor Larry Davis. “He also gained substantial hands-on experience by working on his own vehicles. Isaac approached his work with a strong willingness to learn, a commitment to delivering high-quality results, and a disciplined work ethic. These qualities, combined with his experience, made him an ideal candidate to compete at the regional level.”
Davis added, “While the curriculum we cover in class is consistent for all students and has remained largely unchanged in recent years, it is the students who take their learning beyond the classroom who truly excel. Isaac demonstrated this ability with exceptional skill, consistently applying the material in a way that exceeded the expectations.”
As Isaac prepares for the national SkillsUSA Automotive Service Technician competition held in Atlanta, Georgia, this summer, the entire Vantage Career Center community is rallying behind him, celebrating his hard work and the doors this achievement has opened. His journey exemplifies the mission of Vantage—to equip students with the skills, experience, and confidence needed for success in high-demand careers.
